Research from Aberystwyth University has demonstrated that feeding Garlic Horslyx can significantly reduce fly irritation and other biting insects for horses at grass.
The Institute of Biological, Environmental & Rural Sciences at Aberystwyth University conducted a 12-week study, from July to September, observing horse behavior and fly numbers around four horses. The trial was divided into four treatment periods, each lasting three weeks, with each horse experiencing two control periods and two treatment periods.

To ensure a fair trial, the four horses were split into two groups and kept in adjacent paddocks separated by an electric fence. The horses remained in the paddocks during the day, with one horse stabled overnight. Garlic Horslyx was available in the paddocks from 8 AM to 6 PM, allowing 10 hours of access and an average intake of 175g per horse per day.
The results showed that horses with access to Garlic Horslyx had 64.5% fewer flies landing on them compared to control horses. This significant finding supports previous studies on similar subjects.
The research concluded: “This level of reduction indicates that Garlic Horslyx consumption benefits horses by reducing insect burden, making them less irritable and more manageable.”
Additionally, horses with access to Garlic Horslyx exhibited significantly fewer muscle twitches than control horses, indicating fewer flies causing irritation. “The significant reduction in muscle twitches suggests that Garlic Horslyx supplementation reduces insect harassment and sensitivity,” the report concluded.
This comprehensive university study is excellent news for horses and ponies that suffer from flies during the hotter months. This is the third independent study on Garlic Horslyx, all confirming its effectiveness in repelling flies and biting insects. Another independent university trial, another success story for Horslyx!
